Jazz Leeds Workshops and Jazz Choir

The Seven Jazz Workshops are back! We’ve had some fantastic playing recently – huge thanks to everyone who came along. One comment was: “I didn’t know I could play as well as that!”

Please check our website for up-to-date listings.

Instrumental Workshop

On alternate Saturday afternoons at Seven Arts, 31a Harrogate Road, Leeds, LS7 3PD

Time: 2:30-4:30 pm

Cost per session: £10/£8 concession

Tutors: Will Howard and Dominic Moore  Email: jeanwatsonlifeskills@hotmail.com
or Tel: 0113 2370700.

During the workshops we aim to work on some numbers to perform at the beginning of our Jazz Café. Always really nice and supportive! Workshops cost £10/£8 concessions. Workshop members need to have some experience of playing (say a couple of years) and an interest in jazz, though not necessarily in playing it – just a willingness to have a go! Some reading experience useful but not essential. Attend when you can – it’s not a requirement to come to all sessions! Listen at the first session if you wish.

It’s helpful if you reserve a place so that we have an idea of numbers and instruments, and occasionally the timing of the workshop may have changed slightly.

For further information & bookings contact Jean Watson by email at jeanwatsonlifeskills@hotmail.com or phone 0113 237 0700. (Or speak to us at our Sunday afternoon jazz or at any of our evening jazz concerts).

See you soon, Jean Watson, Seven Jazz Leeds.

Dales Jam

Dales Jam

Dales Jam are a community Jazz Band based in Skipton and run a weekly workshop where they learn, have fun and rehearse, on a Monday night between 7:00-9:30 pm (all welcome, all styles, all instruments, all levels – please check dates first)

Dales Jam was formed in 2003 by a group of people of all ages and musical abilities, who wanted a time and a place to meet up and play music. Since then, under the guidance of a professional music director (Richard Ormrod) the band has grown in numbers and meets at Ermysteds School in Skipton.

As a community jazz band, Dales Jam encourages anyone to participate. That’s why there is no age restriction, and all musical abilities are catered for. There are opportunities to take first steps into improvising (one member described it as ‘improvising in a safe environment’), but only if you want to! All our music is arranged to fit members’ abilities… although the workshops will lead to you stretching yourself musically.

We started out primarily as a jazz based band, and much of what we do is still rooted there, but it’s world music based including African, Klezmer, Cuban, Asian together with Stevie Wonder, John Mclaughlin and John Coltrane tunes. Our music is usually arranged by Richard but he does encourage contributions of original music by band members.

£5.00 / £2.00 U18s.

Sheffield Jazz Workshops

Please make contact for 2016 information. Ring Pete Lyons on 07950 921067 or Chris Walker on 0114 236 7570. You can also check the website for latest information.

Sheffield Jazz has, for more than 35 years, provided a chance for anyone interested in jazz improvisation, to play with other musicians in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

At present we are able to have six groups every Saturday morning. The six groups could be described as follows:

Group 1
This group will cover basic ground so people relatively new to jazz improvisation can take part. People who are completely new to the whole thing will also be made welcome. In 2016 this group will be run by Seth Bennett.

Group 2
The second group is for people who are comfortable with the basics and want to move on to material that’s a bit more challenging. In 2016 this group will be run by Nick Fletcher.

Groups 3 & 4
The third and fourth groups are for people who have some experience of jazz improvising and want to move on towards more involved approaches and more complicated material. In 2016 these groups will be run by Hannah Taylor and Pete Lyons.

Groups 5 & 6

The fifth and sixth groups are for people who are more experienced and want to explore more advanced material or the use of advanced techniques in a standard setting. In 2016 these groups will be run by Chris Walker and Sam Dunn

The groups meet in the main, large building of the school (the one that looks like a Stately Home!):

– group 1 on the 1st floor (left hand side of building)

– groups 2 & 5 on the ground floor

– group 3 in the 1st floor library (right hand side of building)

– groups 4 & 6 on the top floor (right hand side of building)

If you turn up at about 9.40 there’ll be people around to ask directions to the group you’re interested in.

Groups receive guidance and tuition from local jazz players with wide experience of playing and teaching.

All sessions are open for anyone to drop in – there’s no obligation to attend for a whole season!

Times
10.00 am–12.30 pm Saturdays:
(Most Saturdays during school term time or when the school provides a caretaker to open up).

Location
King Edward’s Upper School, Glossop Road, Sheffield, S10 2PW
(next to King Edward’s Swimming Pool – car park access from Glossop Rd or Newbould Lane)

Cost
waged: £12.00
unwaged: £6.00

Who’s it for?
Anyone interested in exploring jazz improvisation is welcome to join in. The best way to find out if it’s right for you is to turn up and give it a try! The workshop does not own or provide any equipment, so bring your own gear – it will be useful for keyboard players to bring an electric keyboard as most rooms we use don’t have pianos. Guitarists & bass players will need to bring an amp. Vocalist will need a mic and an amp unless you have a very strong voice! (bear in mind you’ll probably be in a room with 6 – 10 saxophones or brass instruments and need enough amplification to be heard in that context). Everyone else bring your instrument (and a music stand and pen or pencil).

Tutors
Workshop groups are mostly run by Chris Walker, Pete Lyons, Seth Bennett, Hannah Taylor, Nick Fletcher and Sam Dunn. Occasionally some sessions will be  run by other local musicians, including Johnny Hunter, Jude Sacker and Graham Jones.

Want more information?
Ring Pete Lyons on 07950 921067 or Chris Walker on 07791 843903.
